ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LIX 1998 pp.111 Rainieria latifrons (Loew, 1870) collected for the first time in Hungary (Diptera: Micropezidae) R. van der Weele On June 8th 1998 Gábor Szűcs, who takes care of the shop of LG Pannon Plastics Ltd. at Nagytétény asked me to have a look to a 'funny beetle' in his office. It was a species of the Micropezid genus Rainieria Rondani, 1843. I suspected it to be a R. calceata (Fallén, 1820), which is not rare in the forests of Hungarian hills and mountains. It proved, however, to be a male of the very rare species R. latifrons, which has been recorded from the Balkan, East Siberia and Japan. The third species of Rainieria in the Palaeartic region, namely, R. boninsensis (Hennig, 1935) is only known from Asia. R. calceata and R. latifrons are closely related species, but may easily be separated by the wings; those of R. calceata are conspicuously infuscated by a broad subapical transverse band. Also the top of the wing is darkened. The markings on the wings of R. latifrons are much more unclear and smoky. Furthermore the base of the femora of R. latifrons is yellowish red, the same of R. calceata the is dark brown. Microscopic differences of the genitalia may give an additional help in the separation of the two species. I deposited the specimen in the collection of the Hungarian National History Museum.
