ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LIX 1998 pp. 103-109 Rare and interesting species of Xylophagidae, Stratiomyidae, Acroceridae, Therevidae and Conopidae collected in Hungary (Diptera) R. van der Weele Rare and interesting species of Xylophagidae, Stratiomyidae, Acroceridae, Therevdae and Conopidae collected in Hungary (Diptera) - Notes on five fly families with reference to collecting localities. During the years between 1992 and 1997 I collected many rare and interesting flies in Hungary of which some proved to be new to the Hungarian fauna. In this article I focus mainly on the so-called lower Brachycera and Conopidae. XYLOPHAGIDAE Xylophagus compeditus Meigen, 1820 The members of this family are seldom collected. Furthermore some determinations proved to be wrong. X. compeditus, though only very recently recorded from Hungary (Papp L., 1998) for the first time, appears to be the least rare. In the collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum of Budapest there are several specimens. I collected a male specimen on May 19th 1997 in the Pilis in a beech-forest. As most species of Xylophagus it was found not far from the habitat, where the larvae develop, i.e. in a decaying tree-trunk. STRATIOMYIDAE It is indeed a pity that so few amateurs in Hungary collect these beautiful flies. The family is not too big, determination is in most cases not difficult and there is still much to be learned about their contribution to the Hungarian fauna. Allognosta vagans (Loew, 1873) It is mentioned in the Catalogue of Palaearctic Diptera as Hungarian, but missing from the key of the Fauna Hungáriáé. It does not seem rare. I collected two large series
