gary", without closer locality data. Of course, this is not a critique on Schmitz's works: he was really great but records like "U" for "Ungarn" (e.g., Schmitz 1928) cannot serve as a solid base for inclusion of a species in the faunistic list for Hungary. As it is well known, the present Hungary covers ca 1/3 of the area of the country before 1920. In addition, a very significant part of the material in the era of K. Kertész's curatorship was collected outside of the present borders but all the names were written on labels in Hungarian orthography, and as Magyarized names of localities which lie now in Slovakia, Croatia, Romania, etc. Scientists other than Hungarians have always had problems with these circumstances and so labels with "Hungária" or similar notes have caused much confusion. For the present paper we accepted all the records of this kind but since all the old material identified by Schmitz perished in fire in 1956 in the HNHM (so no voucher specimens of the former records exist today), retaining any species on the Hungarian list, which is not represented in the material collected after 1957, must be done with critical care. In the list below we use square brackets for the specific names, which have not been recorded from Hungary but which are expected to occur here. We based our decisions on their inclusion mainly on Disney's (1991) catalogue. A further 248 species of this kind are listed. We think the phorid fauna of Hungary must be over 500 species but various special collections need to be done in order to add more species to those represented in previous collections from Hungary. We can regard this paper as a very first step in the study of the phorids of the Carpathian Basin.
