Chelonus Jurine, 1801 The Palearctic species of the genus Chelonus are in a high need to revise their taxonomic position. A considerable amount of the species is not interprétable merely on the basis of the (original) description on one hand and the identification keys presented by Szépligeti (1908), Fahringer (1934), Telenga (1941) and Tobias (1986a) for the western Palaearctic or European species do not comprise every Chelonus species, on the other. Consequently, our present knowledge allows but an approximative calculation of the number of the Chelonus species in Europe which is about between 80 and 90. From among these species 37 are listed in the fauna of Hungary of which 16 species proved to be new to its fauna (Chelonus antennalis, Ch. asiaticus, Ch. bidens, Ch. brachyurus, Ch. breviventris, Ch. capsa, Ch. humilis, Ch. jacobsoni, Ch. kryzhanovskii, Ch. mirandus, Ch. ocellatus, Ch. seticornis, Ch. speculator, Ch. subannulatus, Ch. subseticornis, Ch. wesmaeli). My identifications were authenticated either by the examination of the type(s) of several (e.g. Thomson's, Tobias', Wesmael's) species or confirmed personally by van Achterberg and Tobias. The taxon names Chelonus Jurine, 1801 versus Anomala Von Block, 1799 was discussed by van Achterberg (1982, 1987). Chelonus annulatus (Nees, 1816) (= Ch. maculatus Szépligeti, 1896) — Frequent to common in the Palaearctic Region. In Hungary widely distributed in the Eupannonicum (1/1), in other districts much less frequent. — Localities: 1/1: 37 females + 11 males from 19 localities — II/l : 26 females + 1 male from 8 localities — II/2: 1 female (lectotype of
