FOLIA ENTOMOLOG ICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LIV 1993 p.9-16 Description of Humerobates setosus sp. n. (Acari: Humerobatidae) from South Africa By V. M. Behan-Pelletier and S. Mahunka (Received February 24, 1993) Description of Humerobates setosus sp. n. (Acari: Humerobatidae) from South Africa. - Description of a new Humerobates (Acari: Otïbatida) species from South Africa living on Protea roupelliae leaves. Introduction Dr. I. Pajor of the Forestry Research Station, Cathedral Peak, Winterton, South Africa has kindly sent us a large series of a species of Humerobates collected from Protea roupelliae leaves, which is described below. Despite the large number of mites on the leaves, no leaf damage was observable. Humerobates setosus sp. n. Adult Measurements. - Mean total length: females (n=10), 518 um (range 504-543); males (n= 10) 471 urn (range 432-496). - Mean notogastral width: females, 324 um (range 312-344); males, 297 um (range 280-320). Integument: Microtuberculate over whole body and leg segments, microtubercles longer than wide, giving bumpy appearance to integument. Microtubercles on femora I to IV and trochanters III and IV forming longitudinal ridges. Edge of pteromorphs outlined by band of longitudinal striae, band 20-24 urn wide. Excrescenses of cerotegument granular; restricted to region between pteromorph, pedotectum I, and tutorium and lateral body wall, and extending along dorsosejugal furrow. Prodorsum (Fig. 1): Rostrum rounded, with pair of lateral incisions and teeth. Pair of faint ridges extending posteriorly from teeth, almost in longitudinal line with pair of faint prolamella extending from base of lamellar cusps anteriorly. Rostral seta (ro) strongly barbed, 90-100 urn long, extending beyond tip of rostrum, curved anteromediad. Lamella narrow, about 68 urn long; with small, hardly protruding cusp, about 6 urn long. Cusp rounded distally, distance between base of cusps about 40 um. Translamella absent. Cusp bearing barbed lamellar seta (le) 110-120 um long, arising distally, extending beyond tip of rostrum. Interlamellar seta (in) barbed, similar in shape to le, 124-146 um long, extending anteriad of lamellar cusp. Mutual distance of setae le and in about 42 and 56 urn, respectively. Exobothridial seta (ex) 50-54 urn long, barbed. Sensillus (ss) 30-34 urn long, with short peduncle barely extending from bothridium, and large, wide head, with spiculate surface. Bothridium oval (Fig. 2). Sejugal porose area (Aj) subcircular, about 6 urn in diameter, conspicuous.
