ructions. If I nevertheless decided to publish them, it is because of my strong conviction, that we badly need phylogenetical hypotheses to discuss and test. I do not remember, who is the author of the famous enunciation, that "false hypothesis is frequently more instrumental to the progress in science, than a right one", but even if this paradoxical statement is not always verbally exact, it surely reflects a very important truth. So, I tried to make my hypothesis as sound as possible, taking into account all the evidence available to me, but I would find it unwise to refrain from publishing it only because these data (limited as they are to morphology and zoogeography) fall yet short of being sufficient to motivate my views in every detail. I look forward to critical discussions, hoping it will bring new evidence to light and make it soon possible to replace my hypothesis by a sound, well-grounded theory! References Bellamy, G L.
