into and possesses more or less prominent anterior apophyses; the gonopod telopodites also carry a strong parabasal process each. However, the gonopod conformation in Topalodesmus gen. n. seems to be unique, as the telopodites have the parabasal process lying mesad of the acropodite, and also a lateral shorter parabasal process each. Topalodesmus communis sp. n. Length 8- 10 mm, width 0. 65-0. 8 and 0. 5-0. 6 mm on midbody meta- and proterga, respectively. Holotype S ca. 8. 5 mm long and 0. 75 mm wide. Coloration whitish to yellowishbrown, normally quite pale. 20 body somites in both sexes. Pore formula normal (5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 15-19). Head normal, densely pubescent. Antennae long and clavate, considerably longer in ê (in situ reaching to end of body segment 3) than in <j> (in situ reaching only to end of somite 2 or at best to beginning of somite 3), with a group of rather well-developed sensilla on both joints 5 and 6 and a minute middorsal knob on joint 7. Head subequal in width to somite 6 or 7 inj? and already to somite 2 in ç (Fig. 7), subequal to or even a bit narrower than midbody rings in 6, but considerably narrower than midbody somites in o_. Body particularly moniliform in S, especially narrow inj? to segment 6 or 7, whereupon becomes parallel-sided in both <? and o to begin very gradually tapering from ring 16 onward. Paraterga rather moderately developed, but lying quite high (at about a quarter of metasomital height), with 2-3 small incisions at lateral rim; caudal angles mostly obtuse or subrectangular, reaching in an almost beak-like way to hind tergal contour only on ring 17, on somite 18 slightly projecting beak-like beyond the contour, almost missing on ring 19. Pores lie dorsolateral^, not very obscure. Macrosculpture rather poorly developed (especially on rings of hind body half), but quite visible/traceable as usual three transverse rows of polygonal fields each crowned with a minute simple seta. Tergal setae may be subclavate, only on collum and in hind row of metatergum 19 somewhat longer and bacilliform. Microsculpture rather finely punctured (s. Figs 7-8). Epiproct relatively long, in lateral view slightly curved and finger-shaped, in dorsal view as a narrowly truncate cone. Subanal scale subtrapeziform, with a pair of long setae. Pleural keels absent. Sterna moderately setose, without peculiarities, only in <j> with a thick two-humped ridge (r) in front of vulvae (v) behind coxae 2 (Fig. 9). Legs well incrassate in <5 (especially well due to all joints but tarsi), becoming increasingly longer and slenderer toward telson, particularly enlarged in 6 almost all pregonopodal (except for pairs 1-2) and a few postgonopodal pairs (but not pair 9), in o legs much slenderer. Tarsal sphaerotrichs absent. Gonopods (Figs. 10-18) very complex. Coxite very massive, its outer surface finely papillate, with a pronounced caudal finger (u) and a particularly deep cavity for the acropodite to hinge into. Telopodite high, subclavate, parabasally with a short and stout lateral (q), a shorter, more massive and densely setose caudal (a), and an extremely long, fingershaped, curved, in distal third slightly rugose, spiniform process {]). Telopodite at midlength alveolate mainly on mesal side, with a couple of lateral swellings, distally split into a pair of relatively small and inconspicuous laminae concealing small and simple free solenomerite (b) terminating seminal groove lying all on inner side and beginning in usual setose ampule for coxal cannula to hinge into. Remarks: It is my pleasure to name the new genus after its collector and my friend, Dr. Gy. TOPÁL, of the HNHM. The species name refers to the abundant material he collected.
