Topalodesmus gen. n. Diagnosis: Fuhrmannodesmidae of medium size (about 1 cm long), with the gonocoxae massive and deeply concave for the acropodites to hinge into, and telopodites possessing a number of distinct outgrowths (including one particularly prominent), rather slender, holding parallel to the main axis or somewhat crossing each other, with seminal groove ending on an inconspicuous solenomerite. 20 body segments. Pore formula normal. Legs without tarsal sphaerotrichs. Type species: Topalodesmus communis sp. n. Figs 7-11. Topalodesmus communis gen. n., sp. n. ; ^ paratype (7-9) andj$ paratype. 7= anterior body end; 8= somites 8-9 (dorsal view, left half); 9= sternal ridge behind legpair 2 (frontal view); 10-11= gonopod (lateral and mesal views, respectively). Scales = 1.0 mm (7-9) and 0. 2 mm Remarks: With the only exception that the gonotelopodites of Topalodesmus gen, n. resemble some extent those of certain Himalayan Hingstonia , in particular H. falcata Golovatch, 1986 from Nepal (s. GOLOVATCH 1986, 1987a, c), it is surprising that the new genus displays so feeble relationships with the other fuhrmannodesmid genera quite abundantly represented in the entire Indo-Himalayan region, i.e. Ootacodesmus Carl, Pseudosphaeroparia Carl, Lankades mus Carl, Kukkalodesmus Carl, Sholaphilus Carl, Coonoorophilus Carl (s. CARL 1932, 1935; GOLOVATCH 1986, 1987a, c). On the contrary, the most obvious relations of Topalodesmus gen. n. seem to lie with the northern South American members of the family, i.e. Cryptogonodesmus Silvestri, Br achy ce rode s mus Carl, Gyrophallus Carl, Fuhr- mannodesmus Carl (s. CARL 1914). Like in the above-mentioned American fuhrmannodesmids, Topalodesmus gen. n. has the gonocoxae deeply concave for the acropodites to hinge i4
