FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK XLVIII 1987 p. 97-104 A contribution to the knowledge of clearwing moths (Lepidoptera, Sesiidae) in Hungary By Z. LASTUVKA and A. LASTUVKA (Received January 9, 1986) Abstract: A contribution to the knowledge of clearwing moths (Lepidoptera, Sesiidae) in Hungary. - Records of 7 species of the family Sesiidae new for the territory of Hungary: Sesia melanocephala Dalman, Synanthedon melliniformis (Laspeyres), S. loranthj (Králicek), S. spuleri (Fuchs) , Cha maesphecja similis Lastuvka, Ch. tenthredinifor- mis (Denis et Schiffermüller), Bembecia albanensis (Rebel); additional data on Ch. colpi- formis (Staudinger), distinctive characters, genitalia, distribution. When studying the material of the family Sesiidae preserved in the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest, several species were discovered whose occurrence in the Hungarian territory has not yet been recorded or whose existence has been insufficiently confirmed and evidenced by material. KOVÁCS (1953) lists 33 species of this family from Hungary. In his later report (KOVÁCS 1956) he presents some supplementary and more precise records while omitting erroneous data. LIPTHAY (1961) described Chamaesphecia sevenari from northern Hungary. The present article summarizes the findings of 7 more species new for this territory, supplementing for Ch. colpiformis yet unpublished localities. Sesia melanocephala Dalman, 1816 Euro-Siberian species bound in its occurrence to stands of older aspens (Populus tremula), known from most countries of central and northern Europe, France (LERAUT 1980), Spain (BUSTILLO and VARELA. 1981), Italy (CURO 1875), Yugoslavia and Roumania (POPESCU-GORJ and al. 1958). Specific tunnels and emergence holes were found in 1975 not far from Tatabánya. New for Hungary ! Examined material: Tarján, 20. VI. 1975, tunnels and holes in Populus tremula, Igt. Z. LASTUVKA. Synanthedon melliniformis (Laspeyres, 1801) This species is described independently from Italy (LE CERF 1922; as Synanthedon mlmus ), Yugoslavia (KRANJCEV 1979 a; as S. croatlcus ), Czechoslovakia (KRÁLICEK 1975; as Aegerla danu- bica ) and southern France (LASPEYRES 1801) (LASTUVKA and SPATENKA 1983; LASTUVKA, in press). Habitually it is rather reminiscent of small specimens of S. vespiformis. Unlike this species, it lacks the conspicuous red marking outside the fore wing discal spot and/or further red colouring in the vicinity of the external transparent area and in the apical area. Characteristic of S. mellini formis is the yellow colouring of the ventral side of the abdominal 4-5th segment. The genitalia of both sexes are quite specific, especially the hooked crista saccull on male valves and the unspecialized ostium bursae before the 8th segment in females (Figs 9,10). Evidently referring to this species are the data by TOMALA (1913) on the finding of S. flavi- ventris (Staudinger) larvae in twigs of Populus alba. This is also testified, among others, by another 1 o deposited In the HNHM under the designation "coll. Tomala, flaviventris" . The host plants of the larvae are the species of the genera Populus and Salix (KRANJCEV 1979 a). New for Hungary!
