A Report of the Collecting of the Ninth Expedition* By A. VOJNITS and L. ZOMBORI (Received October 25, 1986) Abstract: Zoological Collectings by the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Korea. 83. A Report of the Collecting of the Ninth Expedition - A report is given on the zoological collecting trip made by two Hungarian zoologists in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in May-June, 1985. A list of collecting sites with data and pertaining references is presented. I The interstate agreement signed between Hungary and the Democratic People' s Republic of Korea gave the opportunity again for two staff members of the Hungarian Natural History Museum to visit this Far Eastern country. Our principal aim was to help explore the fauna of Korea and to further enrich the various collections of the Zoological Departement of our Museum. The earlier eight expeditions of our Museum (MAHUNKA and STEINMANN 1971, PAPP and HORVATOVICH 1972, PAPP and VOJNITS 1976, DELY and DELY-DRASKOVITS 1978.. VOJNITS and ZOMBORI 1979, STEINMANN and VÁSÁRHELYI 1980, FORRÓ and TOPÁL 1981, FORRÓ and RONKAY 1983) made collectings in the different seasons excepting spring. Accordingly, we endeavoured to arrange our programme to begin in 1985 as early as possible. This could be realized through the uderstanding and assistance of several sponsoring institutions, in the first place, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Culture on the Hungarian part, and the Department of Foreign Relations of the Korean Academy of Sciences on the part of the host country. We are also much indebted to the Director of the Zoological Research Institute of the Korean Academy of Sciences and his staff, expecially our escorts Messrs. KIM EN SUNG and KANG MOENG BOCK, who shouldered the tedious and tiresome work of organizing our collecting trips in their country. We should like to express our heartfelt thanks to them all, also at this place. We left Budapest on the morning of the 12th of May, 1985 and touching Moscow we reached Pyongyang on the next day. We spent a total of 29 days at five major localities in Korea: 1. Pyongyang City and its environs (11 days), 2. Myohyang-san (4 days), 3. Kumgang-san (5 days), 4. Hyesan (2 days), 5. Samjiyon (5 days), and about two days were spent by travelling to Kumgangsan and to Samjiyon. The collecting sites, the natural geographical regions, the methods of collecting (except one, which see further down) and various other circumstances have been extensively discussed in the earlier reports. Consequently, we decided against repeating anything at this place, though our bold and rather labourious venture in operating a portable Honda generator in Korea, we believe, deserves some commendable words. * With an Appendix compiled by J. PAPP appended to the end of this contribution.
