WEBER (1976), in a work on COCKERELL' s letters 1887-1889, has given many examples of his neat handwriting and pen-and-ink sketches, showing that he was an artist of some talent. COCKERELL' s lucid command of the English language was well known. He wrote short articles on scale insects when short communications were popular and were often sought by journals. One of his essays on bees was regarded as being of such excellent style that it was included in a book of essays for college classes. In his descriptions of scale insects he resorted to comparisons that may seem strange today. Describing what we would now call the supra-anal plate of the lac insect Ta- chardia fulgens , COCKERELL recorded it as '"Tail" very broad, its outline about that of the dome of St. Paul's or narrower in some examples.' Coccidologists have one consolation. If the 500 species of scale insects that COCKERELL described seems a large number, then consider the plight of the apidologist. COCKERELL wrote about 900 papers on bees and up to the year 1938 had described 5480 species. He wrote about 100 papers on bees after that. FERRIS (1957a) has noted that many of COCKERELL' s scale insect 'types' are deposited in the collections of the United States Department of Agriculture and these are now the property of the United States National Museum. COCKERELL was English, however, and what is not generally known is that COCKERELL deposited types of many species in the British Museum (Natural History) or sent them to the Imperial Bureau of Entomology (now the Commonwealth Institute of Entomology) and they were subsequently handed to the Museum. Furthermore he corresponded extensively with E.E. GREEN and R. NEWSTEAD and sent them original or authentic material which these workers prepared on slides. Their collections were later given to the Museum. The purpose of this paper is to list COCKERELL' s slide material of his own species now held in the collections of the British Museum (Nat. Hist.). This material represents 207 species. It is hoped that all this material will be studied eventually and that workers wishing to designate lectotypes will do so only after all the relevant material has been seen. Under each of the following entries are entered the data that COCKERELL mentioned in his original descriptions followed by the data shown on the slides. Much of these data correspond, but sometimes COCKERELL deposited material of his own species that he collected later and this is also listed. Sometimes COCKERELL referred to these later records in his papers and when possible the references are given. There then follows the name under which each species is currently known if this is different from the original. When the labels were written by COCKERELL, the entry is followed by CH, meaning COCKERELL' s handwriting. Every entry is followed by the Museum' s registered number. Each number includes the date of donation and all refer to collections donated by COCKERELL except for 1940-180 and 1945-121, which are the registered numbers of E.E. GREEN'S and R. NEWSTEAD' s collections respectively. Family Margarodidae fulleri, Monophlebus Cockerell 19011: 223: South Africa, Natal, Maritzburg, on grass. 2 9 labelled Monophlebus fulleri [CH] BM 1931-203.
