FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK XLIII. 1. 1982 p. 63-68 Two new mites from the Juan Fernandez Islands (Acari: Acarida and Oribatida) By S. MAHUNKA (Received December 10, 1981) Abstract: Two new mites ( Glyphanoetus pappi sp.n. and Fernandocepheus franzi gen, et sp.n. from the Juan Fernándes Island, collected by Prof. Dr. H. FRANZ are described. In a small soil sample collected and sent by Dr. H. FRANZ (Vienna) to Dr. L. PAPP (Budapest) for dipterological examination, two mite species were found ; both proved toke new for science. The descriptions are given hereunder. AC ARIDA Anoetidae Oudemans, 1916 Glyphanoetus pappi sp.n. Measurements. - Length: 204 yum, width: 136 jum. Dorsal side (Fig. 2): Anterior margin of prodorsum sinuous but widely truncate, with a short, triapicate rostrum. Surface finely punctate. Dorsosejugal region narrow, without sculpture. Prodorsal seta comparatively long and of equal length, inner pair originating a little before outer one. Notogastral setae of diverse lengths; great difference among marginal of median setae existing. Setae ci, dj and ei the longest. Ventral side (Fig. 6): Apodemes well developed. Ap. sa. long but ending free far from lobus of sejugal apodemes. Length of epimeres 1 and 2 différente, epimere 1 nearly twice longer than epimere 2. Posterior sternal plate with thick and characteristic apodemes. Epimeres with a minute alveolus each epimeres 3 with a sucker. Adhering plate small, situated in posterior part of body, 1 pair of well-developed sucker before it. Gnathosoma (Fig. 3): Infracapitulum long, thin, its side nearly parallel, palpi well separated, solenidia thin and long. Legs.: Adhering setae of leg I (Fig. 4) small, spoon-shaped. Group of solenidium consisting 4 members, £ longer than <p 2 > ^2 minu te; a) j of leg II (Fig. 1) longer than <pj. Tarsus of legs III and IV (Fig. 5, 7) with short end-setae each. Material examined: Holotypus (701-HA-82): "SA 189; Juan Fernandez Is. Mas Atierra, Quebrada Viliágra, 150 Höhenmeter tiefer, Wold in Graben-einschnitt, Streugesiebe, 10.11.1968. leg. H. Franz". Holotype deposited in the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. Remarks: The unique and characteristic form of the apodemes of the posterior sternal plate separates the new species from all allies. I dedicate the new species to my friend, Dr. L. PAPP (dipterologist), for his help in my work.
