FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK XLIII. 1. 1982 [>. 5-7 Record of Chaetocladius Kieffer (Diptera: Chironomidae) from India By P. K. CHAUDHURI and M. GHOSH (Received December 4, 1981) Abstract: A new speciea, Chaetocladius orientális is described from the oriental region. Chaetocladius was erected as a genus in the subfamily Orthocladiinae by KIEFFER (1911) on the basis of a species, Chaetocladius setiger Goetghebuer from Europe which was also taken as as the type species of the genus. The genus is characterised by the presence of bare eyes, erect acrostichal and dorsocentral setae, bare antepronotum, distinct microtrichia on wing membrane, slightly produced costa, fringed squama, empodium shorter than claws, bare anal point, gonocoxite with or without basal lobe and the well-marked gonostylus. BRUNDIN (1956) reaffirmed the generic status and placed a few more genera, Dyscamptocladius Thienemann, Orthocladius Group A Edwards and Pachycladius Kieffer in synonymy with it. As far as literature goes the genus has not so far been recorded from the Orient before this study. Material of the present study was collected from the Silent Valley, Kerala by light-trap operated during the month of May, 1980. The methods used to study the morphology of the insects are the same as followed by CHAUDHURI et al. (1979) and SOPONIS (1977). The microslide mounts of types and paratypes are at present with the collections of insects at the Department of Zoology, University of Burdwan and will finally be deposited in the National Collections of insects at the Zoological Survey of India, Calcutta and the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest.
