According to ICHINOSE (1973), the genus Macdunnoughia Kostrowicki (including also the purissima group) is one of the subgenera of Autographa Hübner. In my opinion, they belong In a common tribe ( Autographini Eichlin et Cunningham, 1978) but are distinct generic taxa. Nearly simultaneously, CHOU and LU (1974) established a new genus under the name Puriplusia and with purissima as the type-species. The differences submitted (the knife-shaped appendix of the valva, the deviating coloration and pattern) do not justify a separation at generic level - as contended also by DUFAY (1977) - because the knife-shaped appendix can be derived from the lobe of saccular origin of the genus Macdunnoughia, though in their final appearances the two lobes are widely dissimilar. An extensive reduction of the cornuti in the aedoeagus can also be observed in the purissima group as compared to the con f usa group; it should be remarked here, that traces of the double series of cornuti can be found in the case of Macdunnoughia (Puriplusia) tetragona (Walker, 1857), the other species of purissima group. The proportion of the apex of the bursa copulatrix to corpus in the females of confusa considerably differs from that found in the purissi ma group, while it is transitional in the case of crassisigna. The ductus is heavily sclerotized, shorter and wider, in the purissima group. However, the coloration and modified pattern again sharply different from that of the confusa group, is an indubitable fact. On this basis, the puris- ma group may be interpreted as a subgenus within the genus Macdunnoughia. Erythroplusia (E.) pyropia (Butler, 1879). Distribution: An Eastern Siberian species penetrating also the northern confines of the Oriental Region. The known occurrences lie in Ussuri, Primorye, Japan, Korea, China, Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan, Pundjab, Bengal. With regard to the generic assignment, the tribe Argyrogrammini is highly problematic, in need of a revision from a uniform point of view, as stated also by EICHLIN et CUNNINGHAM (1978). Until then, I deem it practical to consider the categories Trichoplusia and Ctenoplusia as genera and thus also desist from assigning the respective species at subgeneric levels to the genus Argyrogramma (cf. ICHINOSE 1973). Trichoplusia ni (Hübner, 1802). ( Noctua ni Hübner, 1802, Eur.Schmett. , Noct. f. 284). Prov.
