FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK XIII (XXXIV) 2 1981 p. 27-33 Notulae Oribatologicae XXV. The redescription of Carabodes hungaricus Balogh, 1943 (Acarida: Oribatida) By F. BERNINI (Received December 1, 1980) Abstract. - Holotype of Carabodes hungaricus Balogh 1943 is redescribed. The large body size and microsculpture induce the author to place it among the members of the " coriaceus" group. Besides, author lists many characters differentiating this classical taxon from other Carabodes belonging to this group of species. Introduction In the ambit of the studies I have been making since some years on the genus CarabodeB (BERNINI, 1970, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1979a and b), I am herewith redescribing the classical taxon, Carabodes hungaricus Balogh 1943. For a long time the holotype was believed to have been lost during the Second World War (MAHUNKA, in litt.), but recently the type-series has been rediscovered and, thanks to the kindness of Prof. Dr. BALOGH and Dr. MAHUNKA of Budapest, I have been able to examine the holotype for my studies . Since its first description Carabodes hungaricua has hardly ever been mentioned, so it seems to be an extremely rare and localized species. Nevertheless, there is also the possibility that it may have been confused with another taxon because of its incomplete original description. Just for this reason I deem it useful to redescribe this Interesting taxon with the aim of establishing Its geographic distribution, systematic position and ecology through a preliminary clarification of its morphology. Carabodes hungaricus Balogh, 1943 Carabodes hungaricus Balogh, 1943, Math.termesz.Közlem., Budapest, 39(5): 66 and 133 tab. Xn, figs 5-6. (HerkuleafUrdS, Roumanla;*Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest). Diagnosis: All notogastral setae spoon-shaped and morphologically identical; ta pair deplaced towards shoulders. Tube-like senalllum with open apex and striped inner surface. Adanal setae similar In morphology to notogastrals . Microsculpture of dorsal ridges irregularly disposed. Redescription The type-preparation bears an old label printed: Herkules fürdő (the type-locality) 1930.V.1. - Coll. Dr. Balogh; and in pencil: Carabodea hungaricus. A more recent typewritten label bears: * At present this locality is in the Popular Republic of Roumanla and is known as Baile Herculane (MAHUNKA, in litt.).
