broad as long, eight to ten a little transverse, the last segment a little longer than the penultimate, asymmetrical at apex. Pronotum as long as broad, moderately shining, without microsculpture, with two rows of four punctures and others laterally bearing long bristles, anterior margin more convex, the corners more distinct, the posterior corners rounded, laterally a little narrower towards posterior margin. Elytra as long as broad, shining, without microsculpture not densely punctured, but with large and small punctures mixed, with lateral long bristles of two different sizes; suture broadly bordered. Scutellum finely and densely punctured. Abdomen very sparingly punctured, mostly in a row at the base of tergites, microsculpture extremely fine and seen only through a high power magnification; with long slender bristles; narrowing to the apex. Legs spinose, with long bristles, the first segment of the posterior tarsi almost equal to the length of the three following together. Length 10 mm. Holotype o unique: Gawe, Near Morawaka, Eastern Highlands, 8.5.1974 at light (R . Hornabrook). Philonthus pllosus sp.n. The colouring of this species is similar to P . saltus Last, but it is larger than this species with coarser puncturation of the elytra and abdomen. The head and pronotum are impunctate and the antennae much shorter, with the segments broader and shorter. It differs in having dense long black bristles from all parts of the body but in this respect it resembles P. setosus Cam., but the elytra has denser puncturation and differently coloured and the segments of the antennae are shorter. Completely black, except elytra which are shining green, and the last three segments of the antennae which are cream-coloured. Head slightly transverse (7.75:7), shining, without microsculpture, with large punctures on the temples and with a sprinkling of minute punctures between the base of the antennae; eyes not convex, their longitudinal diameter one third the length of the temples which are straight with the posterior corners rounded; antennae with second and third segments of equal length, a little shorter than the first, segments four to seven longer than broad; segments eight to ten quadrate, last segment a little longer than the penultimate, asymmetrical at apex. Pronotum as long as broad, shining, without microsculpture, dorsal rows of punctures each with four, with numerous setiferous lateral punctures, sinuate at posterior third. Elytra a little longer than broad (10:9), very shining, with a very weak almost obsolete microsculpture, moderately densely punctured, with sub-erect setae, with a broad suturai border, and a weak sinuation at posterior corners. Scutellum large, finely and spraingly punctured. Abdomen rather strongly punctured at base of tergites with alutaceous microsculpture, tergites with apical setae. The most outstanding character of this species are the bristles which project laterally at right angles from the temples, the pronotum, especially the anterior corners, the elytra and abdomen, the femora and especially the tibiae, where they are almost as long at the tarsi. Length 15 mm. Type unique o, Daullo Pass 25.4.J1971 (R. Hornabrook). Philonthus Junius sp.n. This species belongs to several others having a black head, red pronotum and a blue/green elytra. It can be compared with three species and differs as follows. From P . rufithorax Fauv .. by the more robust antennae with shorter segments, the microsculpture of head and pronotum, the black and more coarsely punctured scutellum, and the black abdomen. From P.kakodanus Cam., by the much finer puncturation of the elytra, by the microsculpture of the head and pronotum (this is absent in both rufithorax and kakodanus ) (Aedeagus Fig 1A), the large punctures of the abdomen, and its black colour. From P . specialis Cam., by the longer antennae with apical segments less transverse, the larger and more convex eyes and vertex of the head, and differently placed punctures, the coarser puncturation of the scutellum, its broader and more robust build. Head, scutellum and abdomen black, antennae with segments four to nine black, basal three red, last two creamy-white: pronotum, legs and palpi reddish-yellow, elytra mauve, suture black. Head transverse (5.75:4.25), rather shining, with distinct alutaceous microsculpture, large Inter-ocular punctures near inner margins of eyeB, others in the region of the temples, a few long outstanding bristles, eyes moderately convex, their longitudinal diameter half as long again as the length of the temples, posterior corners rounded but distinct. Pronotum longer than broad (5:4), with microsculpture diagonally towards the median line, with two rows of four rather large punctures and more at anterior corners from which are rather long erect black bristles, rather convex, laterally narrowing a little to the posterior corners which are rounded. Elytra as broad as long, moderately densely and finely punctured, without microsculpture, with fine setae and lateral
