Holotype 3 Màrifuanga, Asaro-Chimbu Divide 23.10.1971, paratypes (1 ex 5 3 ex p) Daullo Pass 30.10.1971, also paratypes (2 ex d 1 ex p) the same locality 27.2.1972 (R. Hornabrook). Paratypes 1 ex S 4 ex p Daullo Pass 23.1.1975 (C. Hornabrook). Neobisnius novus sp.n. Compared with N. procerulus Grav. and N. lathrobioides Baudi (from Europe) the head has similar puncturation but the eyes are larger, distinctly more convex and the head is slightly broader anteriorly, the pronotum is narrower and the elytra are broader at the "shoulders", the pronotum is less densely punctured laterally, the puncturation of the elytra is very similar, but in N . novus sp.n. they are entirely black. The aedeagus is different in having the median lobe broader, more gradually acuminate, and on the "inner face" of the paramere there are four very close "pegs" on the apex, in lathrobioides the four pegs are placed much wider apart at about the apical fifth, it is also broader and more rounded (aedeagus Fig. 17). Black, tarsi blackish-red. Head as broad as long, shining, strongly and more densely punctured on temples and inner margths of the eyes, the punctures bearing fine setae which are directed towards the centre, eyes a little convex, their longitudinal diameter shorter than the length of the temples (2:3), rather flat between the eyes; antennae with second and third segments of almost equal length, a little shorter than the first, segments four and five slightly longer than broad, segments six and seven as broad as long, eight to ten slightly transverse, last segment a little longer than penultimate. Pronotum longer than broad (2. 5:2), shining, strongly but not densely punctured laterally, with fine setae directed towards the centre, sometimes with faint indication of microsculpture, very weakly laterally sinuate for the whole length, converging strongly to the anterior margin. Elytra longer than broad (3.5:2.75) broader than pronotum, with fine moderately dense puncturation and fine pale-coloured setae, suture rather broadly bordered. Abdomen conspicuously narrower than elytra, finely, densely punctured, more so at base of tergites, with fine setae. Legs with setae and short spines on tibiae. Length 5 mm. Holotype 3 Goroka, Kami River 23. 7.1965 on mud at waters edge, paratypes (4 ex) same data, paratypes (7) Kanu River 31.10.1965, paratype (1) Agakomatuso 26.11.1965, 7000 ft. Indona 17.11.1965 (6 ex) (R. Hornabrook). Hesperus hirsutus Last, 1973 J.Nat.Hist. 7: 431. In Dr. HORNABROOK' s material there was only one female specimen which I made the unique Type. In material collected by Mr. M.E. BACCHUS during the British Museum and Newcastle University Expedition there is another specimen which is a male from which I have been able to make a drawing (Fig. 18). Data: Madang District, Finisterre Mts., Moro, c5550 ft. 30.10-15.11.1964 BM 1965-120. Hesperus spinosus sp.n. This species has a certain similarity to Philonthus sharpl Fauv., but the obvious differences are that the antennae are shorter, head and pronotum do not have the fine microsculpture, the pronotum does not have the usual dorsal rows of punctures, the legs are differently coloured and the abdomen more densely punctured. Black, elytra green, antennae with last three segments creamy-white, legs with femora black, tibiae and tarsi dull red. Head transverse (7:5.5), moderately shining, without microsculpture, but with a sprinkling of minute punctures on dorsal surface; eyes not convex, their longitudinal diameter a little shorter than the length of temples (2.5:1.75), where there are one or two porrect bristles: antennae with segments two and three of equal length, segments four to seven shorter, but longer than broad, segments eight to ten quadrate or slightly transverse, last segment a little longer than the penultimate and asymmetrical at the apex; all segments with black setae. Pronotum a little longer than broad (8:7.5), moderately shining, without microsculpture, but with scattered minute punctures similar to those of the head, but a little more numerous; the usual dorsal rows of punctures absent, a few lateral punctures bearing bristles, anterior margin more convex, laterally weakly sinuate at posterior third. Elytra a little longer than broad (5:4), densely punctured and with short decumbent setae and longer lateral bristles; with broad suturai border. Scutellum densely punctured and pubescent. Abdomen with dense open-ended punctures, which are denser at base of tergites, with rather long slender setae which are denser from ventral surface, there are also a
