ENDRŐDI (Received August 26, 1980) A bstract: Eleven new species of the genus Aphodius Illiger and a new aberrative form are described from South Africa: A. (Pleuraphodius) reticulatus sp. n., A. (Ammoe- cius) orycis sp. n., A. (Ammoecius) orycoides sp. n., A. (Ammoecius) tonderae sp. n., A. (Pharaphodius) chausibensis sp. n., A . (Longaphodius new group) namaquarum sp. n., A . (Cinacanthus) rakovici sp . n ., A. (Blackburneus) bernoni sp . n ., A. (Blackburneus) vixpunctatus sp. n., A. (Bodilus) nylsvleyicus sp. n., A. (Allobodilus) fasclnatus sp. n. and A. (Pleuraphodius) levis Schmidt ab. leviplanus ab. n. The new name of A . costa- tulus Endrődi, 1964 is A . burorum nom. nov. Recently I determined a big material of South African Aphodiinae and found many new species. The description of these species is given below. The types are preserved (if not given otherwise) in the Transvaal Museum (Pretoria), while some paratypes in the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. Aphodius (Pleuraphodius) reticulatus sp. n. Reddish brown, dull, disc of pronotum and of elytra mostly darker. Surface bald. Apical margin of clypeus truncated, genae weakly produced behind eyes. Frontal carina furrowed, without tubercle, clypeal knob flat, but distinct. Surface of clypeus densely, very finely punctate, punctation on vertex somewhat stronger. Pronotum broader than long, sides straight, weakly converging to apex. Anterior angles obtuse, scarcely produced, posterior angles obtusely angulated. Basal border very fine, in the middle broadly interrupted. Punctation on disc fine, rather sparse, on sides much denser. Basal margin with short bristles. Scutellum long triangular. Elytral striae impressed, both sides finely carinated, secondary intervals very narrow, primary ones broad, lightly convex, on apex more flat, everywhere strongly reticulated. Punctures in striae very small . Anterior tibiae tridentate, apical thorn near apex. Transversal carinae of hind tibiae very distinct, apical bristles very short and dense, mostly mixed with few somewhat longer bristles. Hind basitarsi longer than upper thorn of hind tibiae and about as long as following two joints together. Length: 5-5.5 mm. - Examined material 46 specimens. Types: Holotype: S. Afr., N. Transvaal, Nylsvley, Smith frm ., 24°40' S-28°42' E, cattle dung, 13.12.1975, E-Y Nr. 994, leg. Endrődy-Younga. Paratypes: same collecting data (dates different): E-Y Nr. 951, 993, 994, 995, 1016, 1017, 1042, 1043, 1044, 1048; 1 Paratype: S.W. Africa, Kaokoveld, Ohopoho, 122 km SSE, 18°20- S-14°02' E, 5.2.75, E-Y Nr. 617, horse dung, leg. EndrődyYounga .
