Vast areas were covered with larch /Larix gmelini and L. potanini/ and birch /Betula mandshurica/ mixed with pine, at places the latter becoming dominant, and only here and there did we see fir-trees and spruce. Average height of the forest 20-3Q m but frequently we encountered 40-50 m high larches with hardly any clearings and open stretches of land were only seen by the road.Insects were collected at these areas mainly.This was the flowering season of some soft-stemmed plants like Aconitum villosum, Cimicifuga foetida, Aster altaicus, A. scaber, Cirsium sp., Crepis sp.

, Hieracium sp., Senecio sp.and Sanguisorba tenuifolius on which many syrphids,sciarids, aouleates, ichneumonid flies, butterflies, lamellicornia, various weevils were singled.A large number of species were secured in sunshine between the Intervals of two rainy periods. It was quite an experience for us to see the broken taiga at 2100-2200 m becoming dwarf and yielding finally place for the subalpine steppe /Pig 4/

. large expanses were covered with a good quality steppe, still nowhere were we able to see graizing animals. The zone above the forest line waa strewn with various soft-stemmed plants of some 15-20 species flowering in their characteristic, wonderful subalpine colours /28th August/. Besides the huge truncated cone of Pektusan others may also be seen nearby. We climbed Pektusan first by a car,while at a second time on foot. At the altitude of 2600 m and in the crater we had good results in turning over stones collecting Carabidae and Curculionidae

. Three-four species of grasshopper were abundant of which a good series were secured. It was striking to notice that hardly any species of Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera moved about.
