lake shore in the taiga forest. Here we visited the highest mountain of Koreát Pektusan /2744 m/, which is approximately in the middle of the above-mentioned plateau. The average height of Chann-Pay plateau is 1800-1900 m,the ancient rock is covered by some 200 m thick light grey lava. The volcano of Pektusan is likewise covered by light grey pumice debris. The top is capped with snow from autumn till the middle of summer, this gave the earlier name to the mountain /Pek-tu-san = white-headed mountain/. Approaching the mountain from the south on the nearby and farther ridges marks of glacial erosion may be perceived. Similar erosions can be seen on the basalt formations situated above the caldera. This caldera lies some 500 m beneath the ridge of the orater, its length is 4 km, width 2.5 km, average depth 31 m, its water is transparent, colour: aark green / Pig 1/, We were struck by the beauty of the lake and enjoyed its view while descended to its shore. This is one of the highest situated deep lakes in East Asia, Pektusan was active since the close of the Tertiary and terminated in historical times. It was recorded to be active three times between 1597 and 1761, Certain phenomena still suggest that the volcano is not yet extinct . At a second try from Sam-zi-yan we were able to reach Pektusan /about 40 km/, the previous occasion was washed away by torrents of rain, this time we were lucky. It was not raining and even the sun came out at times. During the five days at Sam-ziyan 3 poured with rain and the other 2 were not as we might say the best of times for collecting.
