vely good collecting localities despite the fact that their shores are framed in stone.Since we were able to ascertain that the majority of these small lakes are not : fed by brooks, they must obviously be spring-lakes. However, their flora and fauna do not support this assumption. The water flow of the nourishing springs could be extremely small;their evaporating water is replaced also by rainfalls. The vegetation of the lakelets at De-sang san, visited on several occasions, was adorned by Nymphaea stands, and also Myriophyllum and Cabomba fluorished in their shallow waters. Their faunas appeared to be good and in equilibrium (Nos. 1-10; 22-32; 38-40; 125-130; 135). 2. Wonsan, the eastern seashore, and the Kum-gang san (the famous Diamond Range) The port city Wonsan, about 600 km east of Pyongyang, lies in the semicircle of mountains,on the sandy shore of an extensive, deep bay. The accessible shore is used as a bathing beach and a harbour, the background area is only a semicultured park forest containing both planted and original vegetations. Unfortunately, the general control of insects affects the fauna also in this region, but the effects are not so apparent as in the neighbourhood of the capital. There are some larger and smaller lakes also in the park forest; fish also live in their richly overgrown waters. Collecting on their shores and in the forest is rather profitable (Nos. 42-46). No maritime collecting was included in our plans, thus we refrain from discussing the respecting habitats. The shore, stretching toward the south from Wonsan, is partly craggy, partly consisting of sand dunes. In sites free of agriculture, it is wooded (except for the narrow zone exposed to the action of water), and fine old, closed coniferous forests flourish especially along the sandy stretches of the shore. A pity that it is not deeper than a few hundred meters at most! Despite this, the area is a good collecting locality, owing to its undisturbed state (Nos. 48-49).
