maximum rainfall is in May and June with almost half the yearly total. The decline in August and September is followed by a moderate increase in October and sometimes early November (around 8 in, 200 mm per month), the dfyest months being January and August with 2 to 3 in (50-75 mm) per month. No particular period of the year is without precipitation. The number of rainy days averages around 133 (Axim) . The relative humidity is high and fairly constant throughout the year. The monthly average of the 09.00 value "ranges between 83 # (April, November) and 91 # (January), the 06.00 values being higher and the 12.00 values lower than these. The harmattan, the dry north wind of the dry season, reaches the area mildened and only occasionally for a few hours. The fluctuation of temperature is very small. The monthly average of daily minima averages between 72 and 75 F (22-24 C), and the maxima between 80 and 88 F (26.5-31 C) throughout the year. The typical vegetation of this subzone, the evergreen rain forest • occur/a also in a few small areas where the required climátological conditions are provided by higher altitudes. Such isolated areas are some valleys of the Atewa Range near Kibi, and possibly some of the Togo-Atakora range of the Volta region. The small stands of fern trees are restricted to these Map 1.
