dicate the circumstances of the collections. Some modifications and innovations may he of general interest. Singled collections Not only the 'incidental' captures, hut also some specific collections are indicated by this method in the diary. This method comprises collections made by an exhauster, Leonhard forceps, collecting net (Lepidoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, etc) or by the bare hand e.g. on logs, under tree bark or stones, in flowers, fruits, mushrooms or dung, Coccids and their predators, ectoparasites of Vertebratae etc. Sifted collections This applies to the enrichment of insects mainly in decaying plant remnants and compost. The instrument used was the Reitter sifter. The sifted material is furter processed for selection. The Reitter sifter is not generally recommended for the collection of very soft-bodied insects (Collembola, Protura etc) and its use is also limited in the collecting of Acari and Myriapoda etc . Selectors a) Moczarsky-Winkler selector. This selector has been used for the further enrichment of sifted materials. The material is placed in hanging, loosely woven nylon sacks, and mixed daily till dry.The collecting jar fixed to the lower end of the outer sack can be filled with moist paper strips or furnished with ethanol ,according to the expected material. A hard paper funnel in the outer sack increases the efficacy of the selector. The Moczarsky-Winkler selector is also very useful for various types of materials, if a horizontal wire mesh (copper) is hung in the place of the vertical sacks. The first drying and selection of water-soaked or juicy materials (water collections, shore washing, fruits or dung), and the selection of masses of unwanted insects (ants, termites, bees etc) can be accomplished on the spot.
