being 40 to 50 in (1,000-1,270 mm) per year, but its distribution is very unequal. In the intensely dry period between December and March, the savanna burns out and almost all trees lose their foliage. The relative humidity undergoes extreme fluctuations in the course of the year. During the intense harmattan period the average humidity does not exceed 20-30 The monthly average of the 09.00 value in Navrongo is only 19 i> in January and 25 i> in December. In the rainy season, on the other hand, the humidity is very close to the forest conditions, the average being above 80 The temperature is higher throughout the year than in the other zones. The highest maximum temperature is in March and April, with an average of 102 F (39 C), in Navrongo. The daily fluctuation is large, and much greater than in the forest zone. The typical guinea savanna woodland occupies the major part of this area.Only in the north-eastern corner of the country ,eastwards from Bolgatanga and northwards from the Gambaga scarp (Nakpanduri) , is there an open grassland of the sudan savanna type. The original vegetation is still undisturbed in vast areas, especially in the almost uninhabited Gonja area (savanna woodland type) though the savanna fires were surely not so regular before the human interference. The grassland area on the contrary is highly populated and under intensive farming. 3) Coastal savanna zone The narrow coastal belt up to about 20 mi (32 km) in width, stretching eastwards from Dixcove (near Busua), is the dryest part of the country. The precipitation is below 35 im (880 mm) per year, around Accra reaching only an average of 28 in (710 mm). The relative humidity, due to the proximity of the sea, is hardly lower than in the bordering forest zone. Even the temperature, in spite of the dry climate and higher insolation values, appears to be closer to the averages in the forest zone than in the northern savanna. The vegetation is of two different types. In the western part
