areas. The original vegetation is limited to large forest reserves and the less accessible slopes and valleys. Large areas are occupied by oil palm and rubber plantations or have been altered by cocoa plantations. b) Semideciduous forest subzone This subzone, which occupies most of the forest area, is also under the régime of two rainy seasons, but here the yearly average of precipitation is between 50 and 65 in (1,250-1,650 mm). The first rainy season (April-July) is longer than the second (September-October), and its precipitation is higher than that of the second rainy season. There are several weeks in November and December without any rain. The relative humidity is less constant than in the previous subzone, with markedly lower minimum values. The influence of the dry air masses between December and February is much stronger. The harmattan reaches the area regularly, especially its northern parts, depressing the humidity to around 30 # for longer periods. The temperature does not differ mach from that of the rainforest subzone, only towards the peripheries being slightly in average. Map 2. Localities on the administrative map of Ghana.
