Steinmenn Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest The identification of the orthopteran materials of the Hungarian Natural History Museum began in the last few years. An especially rich material had,in the meantime,been collected in Central and East Asia, especially in Kasahstan and China,supplemented by a further big collection submitted for identification from Western Asia. By the examination of the more than ten thousand specimens originating from the above territories

,one can obtain a more comprehensive picture than that acquired from the hitherto very insufficient and disconnected faunistical information based largely on diverse (and not always new) catalogues and faunistical lists covering only smaller areas. It seemed thus worth while to present a more complete picture of one of the subfamilies of the grasshoppers of the above area*. (Species indicated by a are new for science ;they have been found during the study,and their descriptions submitted in another paper, simultaneously with the present one. ) The key of identification compiled for the genera shown from the area had been based on BEI-BIENKO's (1951) work.
