The History of the Hungarian Entomological Society By Dr. 2. Kaszab Hungarian MaturaJ History Museum, Sudan©** The 14th May 1910 is a truly memorable day in the history of Hungarian entomology. The Eungarian Entomological Society was founded on this day. However, organised society life began only in 1911» and hence we celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Society now, in 1961. Entomological investigations have a history of their own in Hungary. Independent faunistic explorations began at the end of the 18th century. One of the very first research workers had been university professors PILLER and MITTERPACHER, who described the animals, among them insects, too, collected during their voyage in Slavonia, in their wellknown book. In the years around 1800, T.KOY assiduously collected beetles and butterflies, mainly around Budapest. A part of his collection of Lepidoptera may still be found in the Saturai History Museum, The founder of scientific entomology in Hungary was I. FRIVALDSZKY, who, for half a century /1820-1870/, directed and represented Hungarian entomological research. From among his contemporaries, science immortalized several names in the dedications of insect species, discovered by them. We point with pride at ANKER, ECKSTEIN, LEDERER and KIHDSRMANN, who explored the plains and forests, hardly disturbed yet, of Hungary, the faunas of the adjacent countries, the Balkans, . the Near East, and Southern Russia. However, only I. FRIVALDSZKY had * any significant literary achievements. The
