living in the substrate. For this very cause, every endeavour to produce, irregardless of the biological balance of the soil,is doomed to fail , - superseded by a grave deterioration of the soil. It is highly significant that, as mentioned earlier, the Hungarian Entomological Society was the forum, in the last decade, of lectures and discussions on the results, or the problems of, biocoenological problems, It ia to be ascribed to the living traditions and the good work of the Society that its meetings brought together the best workers of Hungarian entomology, - the youngsters just leaving their school-benches, and those perennially youthful entomologists who regarded our science aa their aim in life, indeed, the better part of their lives. The Hungarian Entomological Society stood firm on always these three pillars:the knowledge of the professionale, the experience and enthusiasm of the non-professionals, and the energy of the youngest members. This threefold base predestined the Hungarian Entomological Society to be the principal forum of aloo the discussions on biocoenology , as well as being one of the spiritual centers of Hungarian zoology. And it ie surely no chance that the three clashes of the „IMRE FR IV AL DS ZK Y Medal**, to be awarded with due solemnity the first time today, symbolize this threefold unity. Man today fondly believes that science is omnipotent, and that it is only a question of time to solve even the greatest problems, up to the conquest of interstellar space. The scholar, tho man of science, shares this optimism of the man of the street, - if even in a milder form. At the same time, he never forgets that there are, hand in hand with the thrilling, showy, and animating tasks, also
