It is just natural therefore that production biology la, in the aense outlined, a prerequiaite of any modern agriculture. But thia branch of acience ia atill in ita very beginnings; the few initiated are laying the fundamentals in these days. Yet, in spite of ita infancy, it atill rendered valuable aid to man in the bettering of fisheries, forestry, animal husbandry, and certain aspects of plant protection. 2. In thia latter field of acience, namely plant protection, the significance of coenological investigations is more manifest. In the last few yeara, there were delivered lectures before our Society which discussed the interdependence of coenological investigations and practical plant protection. In this field, Hungarian researches are in the very first ranks of the pioneers, and the résulta are most promising. Time and the aim of my report forbid any lengthy discussion, and thus I outline but the moat important aspecta of the case.Above all ,I must point out the dangers incurring from plant protection measures executed without an adequate knowledge of biocoenoses. It ia well known to experts that the fruit production of '«Testern Europe, and especially of the New World had an immense crisis in recent years. The wideranging and hasty application of contact insecticides in orchards, and chiefly in apple-yards, exterminated, together with the pesta, also the Phytoseiidae, those useful little mites which are the natural checks of the red spider. By the disappearance of the Phytoseiida, the multiplication of the red spidera, in a rate never before experienced, caused heavy losses , and they had been repelled only by a radical change in our measures:by the reinstating of the naturally resident insect community. Also,it was the coenological point of view and the systematical study of animal communities which pemltted the working out of the several kinds of inaect peat forecaate. The results saved a conaiderable amount of producta for our
