András Markó: The Upper Palaeolithic Site at Szob

18 MARKÓ ANDRÁS DISCUSSION The sedimentological examinations of V. Gábori dates the site to the LascauxLaugerie-Ságvár period, which fits well with the age of the fauna (Pilisszántó or Pilisszántó-Bajót fauna phase--). Recently the mammoth remains, found in the context of this period (Esztergom-Gyurgyalag and Grubgraben, Lower Austria) were connected to the scavenging activity of Palaeolithic men. 2 3 However, the radiocarbon age of the mammoth tibia from Szeged-Othalom is in good accordance with the malacological and sedimentological 2 4 record of the site. These assemblages are dated to the younger oscillation of the mini-interstadial, similar to the mammoth bones and teeth excavated on archaeological sites of Pilismarót Öregek-dűlő, 2 5 Budapest-Csillaghegy 2 6 and the Gravettian-type assemblages of the Transdanubian caves. 2 7 Based on these data we date both the mammoth bones and the cultural layer excavated by M. Gábori to the same period as the above mentioned Epigravettian sites. Concerning the raw materials, the small and partly incomplete assemblages from Szob are characterised by the high ratio of pebbles supposed to be local. In the case of the last excavations only in four raw material groups are the cortical pieces totally absent; the chalcedony, Middle Slovakian limn it quartzite, porcelanite and mauve-coloured radiolarite constitute only 7.94% of the total inventory (44 pieces, see table 5.). In the case of the earlier excavations there are no data concerning the ratios, however, we have to stress that the raw material tvpes of eastern origin (obsidian, Cserhát and Mátra tvpe limnic quartzite), absent in the find material excavated by Gábori, are represented by single pieces in the 'Lower layer' of Horváth and Mottl. On typological ground the assemblages are dominated bv burins and endscrapers, with a lower number of perforators. The burins with some tvpical exceptions, seem to be 'ad hoc' specimens made on natural breaks. Ehe end-scraperburin is the only composite tool-type present, the same way as in the upper layer of Ságvár. 2 8 Only some blunted bladelets were found, similarly to the case of the settlement unit III in Mogyorósbánya, 2 9 however, this tvpe was well represented in both assemblages of Ságvár. 3 0 According to J. K. Kozlowski 3 1 the end-scrapers on short blades, present in Szob (Fig. 4.2-3, 5.7.) are typical for the Transdanubian sites (Ságvár, Mogyorósbánva) and Grubgraben. We have to mention however, that according to E. Csongrádi these tools are present only in the upper layer of Ságvár; the relatively few blade end-scrapers of the lower layer were made on large blanks. 3 2 In Szob the majority of the scrapers were made on flakes; these, together with the carenoid and core scrapers were also important elements in both assemblages of Ságvár. 3 3 22 JÁNOSSY 1979, 178-179; VÖRÖS 2000, 202. 23 DOBOSI ET AL., 1991; LOGAN, 1990, 72. 2 4 KROLOPPETAL. 1995.
