András Markó: The Upper Palaeolithic Site at Szob
THE UPPER PALAEOLITHIC: SI I E AT SZOB 11 Beside the pebbles, three different sources of the hydrothermal rocks could be identified. Single pieces originate from the Cserhát and Mátra mountains, lying eastward from Szob, others from the Ziar basin, in Middle Slovakia, 1 9 from 85-90 km in northern direction. Obsidian was quite popular raw material in the Epigravettian period, even in Austria and Moravia 2 0 too. In Szob its use is restricted to the lower layer, where both the Slovakian (Carpathian 1.) and Tolcsva-type (Carpathian 2T) rocks are represented by a core and retouched tools; a burin spall show that the modification of the artefacts were partly taken place on the site. The geological sources are taking place in a 200-230 km distance in eastern direction. (Table 3.) 'С == Ü о. 1Л Я .
