ANIMAL REMAINS FROM AQUINCUM 73 Carnuntu m (Deiitsch-Altenberg, Austria) In Mithraeum I., "many traces of ash among which were bones and teeth of oxe n, shee p and goat s, but mostly gees e and chicke n bones" 1 9 . ITALIA Anger a - "la Tana del lupo" Cave (N-Italy) In a cave with a Mithraeum: "in and in front of the Mithraeum there were bones of cattl e, goat s, poultr y and swin e" 2 0. Osti a - "Mitreo della planta pedis" (Italy) In the central aisle of the Mithraeum: "in the right bench, ... in a small rectangular depression., in a niche there were bones of fow l 2 1 ". Capu a - "S. Maria Capua Vetere" (Italy) In the Mithraeum, "near the crossing of the criptoporticus "occasional" remnants of animal bones" 2 2 were found Roma (Italy) 1. Mithraeum "Palazzo dei Musei di Roma" "In the right niche of the door c., were found some bones. Under the doorway d. there a pit in which a round amphora. "Hundreds o f pig's teet h were found in layers which could equally belong to the sanctuary itself or the rubble of later periods 2 5 " NORICUM St. Urban Se e - "Bichl" Cave (above Glanegg, Katinthia, Austria) The natural cave served as a Mithrauem. There were "animal bones" in the rubbish 2 6 . Tunnel Cav e - Kugelstein at Deutschfeistritz, Mur valley N of Graz, Styria, Austria) From the Roman period layers in the cave, remains of juvenile poultr y and pig s were found. Further animals found here included shee p, goa t, rodent s, birds and fish 2 7 (Table 9.) RAETIA Zilli s - Cave (Schams district, Graubünden Commune (Kanton), Switzerland) In the small cave, a Mithraeum was found. The archaeozoological evidence comprised remains of cattle, sheep/goat, pig, hen as well as horse, red deer and hare8 .
