T. Dobosi Viola - Vári Ágnes: Horváth Adolf János régészeti feljegyzései

ARCHAEOLOGICAL NOTES BY ADOLF JÁNOS HORVÁTH In the Documentation Department of the Hungarian National Musem there is a copy-book with a squares pattern on its cover, its inventory number is 17001. It had got back into its place from the Gáboris' bequest. About half of the pages of this well- thumbed copy-boook are torn out, the remained pages are numbered from 1 till 36. Both the way of writing and the ink of these numbers are identifical with those of the text written in the copy-book. Turning the copy-book upside down from the back cover towards the middle part there are further 11 unnumbered pages with text on them. Two post— cards and a fragment of a calendar- sheet representing the May of 1942 - are slipped into the copy-book. The copy-book, the post- cards and the calendar- sheet contain Adolf János Horváth's archaeological notes, observations, the records of his field surveys. István Torma, editor of the 9 l h volume of the Archaeologoical Topography of Hungary (Magyarország Régészeti Topográfiája) writes about the autnor of these notes the following: "The research history of the Szob district had worked out in a different way...as a result of the activity of Adolf János Horváth, a retired teacher of teacher's training school (for some time he was also a teacher of the higher elementary school at Nagymaros), the villages in the Danube Bend area - Nagymaros, Szob, Zebegény - can be classified among the best konwn areas. . .he collected materials and made excavations at several sites...the rich material rescued by him represent a vast period from the Palaeolithic till the Arpadian Age and served as basis of several archaeological reports and studies". (Budapest, 1993. 8- 9.) The notes were written betwen the dates May of 1935 and October of 1944. Reading through his notes to our great surprise we had to realize that Adolf János Horváth had come to the knowledge of several ideas which later, during the past few decades have become rediscovered by several other scholars. By this, naturally, we do not want to abate the merits of later discoverers but we want to emphasize our honour towards Adolf János Horváth. We are only sorry that this copy-book had not been published earlier. The sites: points of collection yielding Palaeolithic material at Nagymaros and Nógrádverőce, Palaeolithic, Hallstatt, Scythian, Sarmatian and Roman localities at Zebegény, at Szob besides Palaeolithic points of collection the whole archaeological range till the Arpadian Age is represented and several sites of Vác, Helemba, Pilismarót, Léva ancf Pátpuszta are mentioned as well. This article is a letter-perfect publication of these notes. The copy-book contains also a Hungarian translation ot part of Dr. G. Steinmann's study entitled "Die Eiszeit und der vorgeschichtliche Mensch" over two and a half pages which had stopped unfinished in the middle of a sentence. It does not contain personal reflections, comments. We had omitted from this publication.
