60 HARGITA ORAVECZ but it is considerably less frequent and less carefully worked than in the west. 27 Spondylus found in the Balkans probably originates from the Aegean, although a Pontic origin has also been suggested. 2 8 Ochre occurs quite frequently in ALP burials. 2 9 Even though ochre lumps were not found and neither were signs of body painting observed, the use of ochre in the burial rite is indicated by the remains of ochre found inside the vessel from grave B-5. The various elements of the burial rite observed at the Tiszalúc site - the form of the grave pits, deposition of the dead into refuse pits, contraction, orientation and grave gooas - all conform to the general custom of the Alföld Linear Pottery. The distribution of grave goods according to sex and age could not be analyzed in detail, but even so, certain conclusions can be drawn concerning the socioeconomic structure of Neolithic society. The graves contained pottery, stone implements, beads and pendants - the latter two made from Spondylus, bone, clay and stone -, all finds or 'prestige items' which are generally recovered from AI .P burials. The graves did not include outstandingly rich burials, suggesting possible social differences or ranking ('status'). 3 0 The skeletal remains were examined by Zsuzsa К. Zoffmann. Her study is included in the appendix. 2 7 Kalkz-Makkay 1977, Tabelle 1 -, Kurucz 1994, Fig. 2, 126; Domboróczki 1997, 22; Kalicz-Koós 1997, 3031. 2 8 Renfrew 1979, 181-189. 2 9 Domboróczki 1997, 22, proposed that the raw material of the Spondylus beads and armrings from the Füzesabony-Gubakút site came from the Adriatic; Kurucz 1994, 126, note 7. 8 0 Kalicz-Makkay 1977, Tabelle 1; Kalicz-Koós 1997, 30. A general 'uniformization' can be noted not only in the burial rite, but also in the grave inventories. Recent research has also confirmed this: Chapman 1994, 79-81; Domboróczki 1997, 22; Kalicz-Koós 1997, 30-31.
