PALAEOLITHIC: TRACES 57 - also hinder observation. The raw materials of tools Pb. 93.469 and of Pb. 93.498 are of this character, therefore it is possible that the crystals on their edges and/or their reflective surface either cover traces of use or make observation impossible. Moreover, natural gloss on the surface of tools caused by some postdepositional effects, covering the edges (may) interfere with use polishes, making observation impossible or dubious. There is postdepositional gloss on the surfaces of tools Pb. 92.496, 93.272; 93.300; 93.427; 93.407; 93.477; 93.500; 93.281,93.298. Yet there are three implements among them on which some polishes tentatively could be interpreted as traces of use appear. They are: Pb. 93.272: On the right steep edge of the dorsal surface on the plane part of this carinated core tool - and also on the same part on the ventral face - there is a very small spot of polish partly "covered" by postdepositional gloss. Originally this polish was most probably rather strong, though it is impossible to determine what kind of activities and which type of materials worked resulted it. Pb. 93.477: There is a faint polish on both edges of both surfaces of the lower third part of this large unretoucned blade, similarly "disturbed" by postdepositional gloss over the surface. In this case too, the worked raw material and the type of work are undeterminable. Pb. 93.300: There is no postdepositional gloss on that part of this tool - that is on the bulb of this blade - where a small spot-like polish appears. This polish, too, is to small and faint to determine it to be a microwear beyond doubt. Naturally it is possible that also some other part(s) of these tools were used, but its traces are unobservable becasue of the abovementioned causes. On tools Pb. 93.292 and Pb. 93.462 there are no visible traces of use. Fauna 2 0 Trench 1. 4 D. (-65 cm) Mammuthus primigenius Frgamentary upper m 2 tooth. Originally the tooth had got quite intact into the occupation level but calcareous material which had penetrated into the lamellas of tue tooth and originated from the eluviation of the covering loess, pushed out the tooth, that is why we could not pick it up intact. In the opening level of trench 4. at a depth of -90 cm: Und eterminable bone fragments Fragment of an antler tine of Cervus elaphus L. C-14 chronology 2 1 The analysis was made by the C-14 Laboratory of the Nuclear Research Institute of the HAS (ATOMKI) in Debrecen, directed by Ede Hertelendi: Deb 1901 27.700/300 В . P. Culture determination On the basis of the excavation results the archeological material from the site(s) we cannot connect with a definite cultural horizon but rather with a chronological one. The site represents a settlement from the older phase of the Upper Paleolithic having a special function. On the basis of the archeological material we think it consists of two units of the same larger site-complex, situated at a few hundred meters' distance from each other. Within a short period - in 20 Here we should like to express our many thanks István Vörös for the determination of the species. 2 1 We are grateful for the generosity of the Leader of the Laboratory to make the analyses and make the results available for us.
