84 ISTVÁN VÖRÖS allow the calculation of withers height 4 0 (Table 7.). The average Wh of the Őrjeg Early Holocene aurochs is 1565 mm; the extreme values are 1395 (mt) — 1680 (hum). The difference is 285 mm. The Wh of Early Holocene aurochs in the Carpathian Basin is lower, their size dimensions are smaller than those of Middle European aurochs 4 1 and of the ones inhabiting the Atlanto-Subboreal- Balitc area 4 2. The differences in size dimensions and body height correspond to the trend of a N-S direction size decrease. At the same time a NW— SE direction body measurement decrease trend exists as well: 4 3. The Early Holocene aurochs of the Atlanto-Subboreal-Baltic area were larger than the aurochs of the Ponto-Mediterranean area. The NW— SE direction size decrease trend among aurochs stands out against the W— E direction size increase trend among the red deer 4 4. As regards aurochs it is an Atlantic (humid) climate which favours the climate-determined size increase, while this increase among red deer is promoted by a continental (arid) climate. During the calculation of the withers height of aurochs and prehistoric cattle it is striking that the skeletal constitution, allometry of recent cattle population used for determining the MATOLCSI coefficiencies differ from the skeletal construction and proportions of aurochs and prehistoric cattle. In any case it is clear that the metapodia of both aurochs and prehistoric cattle (and also as regards their absoluted imensions) are shorter than their stylo- and zeugopodia. 4 1 Boessneck 1957. 4 2 Degergol 1970.'; Ekman 1972.; Paaver 1965, 307-340. 4 3 Jarman 1969, 247-256. 4 4 Beninde 1937.; Pietschmann 1977.
