Disease The vertebral column of the aurochs bull shows pathological alternations. During the destruction process of the chondrus some capita vertebrae and articular surfaces of the caput of the ribs had been strongly polished (4th vert, thorac. and ribs Fig. 2. 1., 2., 3). On the 6th vert, lumbalis already after the destruction of the chondrus the fossa vertebrae had been strongly polished and the spongiosa with necrotic cavities became exposed (Fig. 2.4.). The Kecel— Rózsaberek aurochs bull suffered from arthritis which had affected his vertebral column at two points : at the cranial part of the row of dorsal vertebrae and at the end of the row of lumbar vertebrea. Still the osteoarthritis deformans is in its early phase. The vertebral column is still mobile. Exostoses had been developed only at the margins of the articular surfaces; on the corpora vertebrae. The dentition and the limb bones of the animal are inctact. Whether the cause of the disease was "a senile pathological alteration" or an infection after a traumatic injury on the lumbar vertebra, cannot be established.
