THE PILISSZÁNTÓ ROCK-SHELTER II . 27 "reddish brown loessy clay" with a few stones which varies between a nut and fist size. The layer contains a great number of animal remains and teeth. It thins towards the entrance. Circa 60—70 cm thick "brown, redish-brownish clay" with limestone rubble. It yielded a few worn and intact bone fragments. Towards the further back western wall of the rock-shelter it thins out. It was deposited directly on the rock base as a 20—30 cm thick clay, "almost identical to the previous layer but slightly more reddish" with many fist size stones. It is sterile and contains neither animal remains nor implements. Layers 9 and 10 were excavated only over a 1 X 1 m 2 area measured out from the 0 point in an eastwest direction. It is a somewhat idealized profile of what is known of southern and western layer sequences of the rock-shelter 7. The sequence of the southern profile of the trial trench was copied by L. Vértes on a lacquer film. He published it together with the results of sedimentological investigations in 1955. 8 THE REVISED SEQUENCE OF I. AYERS The southern profile reconstructed on the basis of the excavation notes and sketches is in Fig. 1. The position and colour of the layers was identified with the aid of excavation notes and of the colour of the original sediments still clinging to the bones. Some of the layers received a new number. The sequence of layers in the Pilisszántó — Rock-Shelter II is not continuous, there is a hiatus between layers 5 and 7, and also between layers 7 and 8. Кevised layers: (Fig. 1., Table 3) Layer 1 — humus (a Vértes: L 1) Layer 2 - prehistoric pit (V: L 2) Layer 3 — brown layer with pebbles (V: L 3) Layer 4 — light brown cave sediment (V: L 4; L 6) Layer 5 — yellow loess (V: L 5; L 7) Layer 5/a — greyish yellow loess (V: L 5; L 6; L 7: "with merges into the loess") Layer 6 — light, tuffic loess (V: L 4;, L 6, which "here and there disappears") Layer 7 — light tan loess with yellow grains (V: L 8, which "thins toward the entrance") Layer 8 — reddish brown clay (V: L 9) Layer 9 — red-brown clay (V: L 10) The sequence of layers had been deposited at a slant. It slopes from the back wall toward the entrance and at the same time arches downward and toward the southern and northern side-walls. The tilt angle of the layers is different in the Layer 8 Layer 9 Layer 10 7 Vértes, L., 1951 Fig. 1., 2., Id., 1965 Fig. 30. s Vértes , L., 1955a Fig. 1.
