Bezeczky Tamás: P. Iturius S. amphorája Vetus Salinában

P. I T U R I U S S А В I N U S' AMPHORA FROM VETUS S A L I N A During the 1949—50 rescue excavation of the site of Vetus Salina (Adony), the rim of a stamped amphora was unearthed as a stray find near the dwelling pits (inventory № 7.1951.6. MNM. The rim diameter is 15,6 cm, and its height is 7 cm. It is light red 2,5 YR 6/8). 1 The horseshoe-shaped stamp, a part of which is missing, was impressed on the outer part of the rim: P-tVR-S,. The height of the letters is 9 mm. A drawing and a photograph of the fragment was published in the excavation report. 2 The rim belonged to an amphora classified as Baldacci III. a. The interpretations of the stamp have so far treated the letters as an abbreviation of a military troop stationed in the area (ala I. Augusta Ituraeorum). 1 2 If this is true, it must be supposed that this stamp is unique, which is wellnigh impossible. As far as we know, either the name of the owner or that of the head of the workshop was usually engraved on stamps. 1 3 In that case, it would be most curious if the name of a troop stationed near Adony were found on an amphora made somewhere else. The workshop area with letters P(ublius) ITVRI(us) SAB(inus) 1 4 have already been published. On the Adony stamp the letters 'I' and 'T' on the tile stamp as well as 'T' and 'V' are abbreviated in ligatures. There is an inverted 'S' on the amphora and one part of the 'A' is also visible so that which letters can be added is fairly obvious. There are quite a number of amphorae made in Istria workshops, among the finds that come from excavations of 1st century AD fort in Pannónia. In this way this fragment is not a unique find. On the other hand, it shows that we have to take into account the traffic in amphorae and oil delivered in amphorae in the 1st century AD, from the time of Claudius over the whole of Pannónia.
