APPENDIX II. ANALYSIS OF AN AMBER BEAD FROM PILISMARÓT-PÁLRÉT Mária FÖLDVÁRI The infra-red spectrum of an "amber" find which came to light during the excavation in Pilismarót-Pálrét shows resemblances in several respects the infrared spectrum of natural ambers, though at the same time it shows certain differences as well. These differences make possible to draw considerable conclusions. On the basis of characteristics concerning the origin of the sample the "Baltic" origin of the find cannot be proved. At that crucial part of the spectrum range (1350—1200 cm^ 1) where in case of ambers of "Baltic" origin a wide, horizontally running "shoulder"-like line (an inclining line in oxidized condition) can be seen; in case of our investigated find there are two peaks of small intensity. This peak used to appear in case of conservation, however, since in our case it is impossible, a great degree of oxidation is possible explanation for it too. The absence of the 880 cm1 band usually appearing in the spectrum of, fresh Baltic ambers and the lower intensity of band 1150 cm1 refer also to the oxidized condition of the sample. According to this interpretation the find is oxidized in such a great degree that infra-red spectrum is simply unsuitable to determine its origin (Fig. 1.). Certain stripes which appear in the spectrum additionally to those can be — but even the whole spectrum as well — might be interpreted as characteristic of the fossilized material of resin of recent deciduouos trees. Since the infra-red spectra of fossil gums from other (non Baltic) territories of Europe are less systematized we are unable to compare our find with these spectra. 1 1 Beck, C. W.—Sprincz, E., Arch.
