HUNTED MAMMALS IN THE ISTÁLLÓSKC5 CAVE 11 Layer IV — yellowish brown loessy clay, with microfauna. 4 Within this layer was the "big hearth" in the middle part of the cave as well as other local minor hearths observed as spots. Layer III sedimentary complex, 5 with three — lower, middle and upper culture and hearth levels. Microfauna also exists, here "Upper culture layer" — "UCL". Layer II — dark brown "lower microfauna startum". It tapers toward the middle part of the cave." There is a hiatus between Layer II and Layer I below it. Layer I — light brown clay, with two — lower and upper — culture and hearth levels without microfauna." The so-called "Lower culture layer" — "LCL". The reconstructed sequence of layers of Istállóskő Cave s along the longitudinal section is on Fig. /.* * LEGENDS: V. = L. Vértes; H. J. Hillebrand; S. = A. Saád; M. = M. Mottl. Numbers after the initial letters of the excavators refer to the years of excavations.; cm — refersto the depth data of Pleistocene sediments (0 cm = absolute — 120 cm!).; m — the distance of sedimentary profiles from the entrance of the cave.; 1. prehistoric and modern diggins; 2. yellow clay; 3. yellowish brown clay; 4. light brown clay; 5. reddish brown clay; 6. greyish brown clay; 7. dark brownish clay; 8. grey clay; 9. dark brown clay; 10. hearth layer/spot with charcoali. 11. culture layer without hearth remains and charcoal. — С 1 4—place of samples collected for С 1 4 analysis. — Sections of blocks between lines reprezent Upper Culture Layer while section below the lower line represent Lower Culture Layer. THE PALAEOLITHIC INDUSTRY OF THE ISTÁLLÓSKŐ CAVE L. Vértes who made the last excavations in the cave and investigated its material determined the Palaeolithic material of "Lower Culture Layer" as. "Middle European Aurignacian I (Au — I)" and the finds of the "Upper Culture Layer" and of Layers IV —V as "Middle European Aurignacian II (Au —II)". 1'' 4 Saád, A., loc. cit.; Mottl, M., op. cit.
