FOLIA ARCHAEOLOGICA XXXIII. 1982. BUDAPEST FAUNAL REMAINS FROM THE GRAVETTIAN REINDEER HUNTERS' CAMPSITE AT SÁGVÁR The reindeer hunters' campsite at Ságvár representing the Gravettian culture is one of the best known and most thoroughly investigated archaeological localities of Hungarian Upper Palaeolithic. The campsite is in Transdanubia at the northern margin of the Outer-Somogy hillcountry, to the SW of the community Ságvár at the ridge of a hill of eastern exposure called Lukasdomb. There is a gorge named "Horhos" leading through the Lukasdomb cut into the loess which traverses the big Gravettian site in its middle. In some places the Gravettian site has two layers. The upper and lower layers are separated from each other by a 100—180 cm thick sterile loess layer. The culture and archaeological material of the two layers are identical. During the excavation fireplaces, pits, garbage accumulations and in the upper level also the foundations of huts and dwelling pits were found. 1 The C u dates of the Gravettian campsite at Ságvár are the following: 2 Between 1928 and 1959 there were 11 systematic excavations at the locality made by D. Laczkó in 1928—1930, J. Csalogovits (later Csalog) in 1931, I. Gaál in 1932, S. Gallus in 1935—37, A. Tasnádi-Kubacska in 1941 (who took out an "in situ" part of the cultural layer), M. Gábori in 1957—59. A great quantity of animal bones was found during the excavations the historical and palaeontological significance of which was recognized already at beginning of the excavations. Accordingly the bone material of the different 1 The summary of the results and finds of the excavations and the further literature in Gábori, M., Arch.
