FOLIA ARCIIAEOLOGICA XXXII. 1981. BUDAPEST WILD EQUIDS FROM THE EARLY HOLOCENE IN THE CARPATHIAN BASIN István VÖRÖS The most important field of research in Hungarian archaeozoology is the historical investigation of one of the main branches of food-producing economy, i.e. that of both animal keeping and the species of domesticated animals. The other branch of food-producing economy significant mainly in prehistoric times is hunting. Yet a complex investigation of hunting and that of wild animals has not been made; only the specific distribution of bones belonging to domesticated and wild animals found in the settlements was investigated. 1 As regards hunted animals except aurochs 2 and red deer : i complex zoological analyses as well as such ones from the viewpoint of economic history were not carried out till now. The research of the origin and changes of Post-Pleistocene wild large mammal fauna in the Carpathian Basin as well as that of their relations to ecological and climatic changes can furnish valuable data for both archaeology and the research of domesticated animals utilizable for a more accurate recognition of the natural environment of peoples as bearers of different cultures and their domesticated livestock. The quantity of bones of wild mammals found in different settlements in the course of archaeological excavations is higly altering. The qualitative composition and quantitative relations of wild mammals' bones depend partly on the composition of the natural wild mammal fauna and partly on hunting customs. During prehistoric times the qualitative result of hunting still reflects the real frequency relations of the hunted stock of game. 4 1 Bökönyi, S., History of domestic mammals in Central and Eastern Europe.
