T. Dobosi Viola: In memoriam Vértes László

IN MEMÓRIÁM L. VÉRTES 277 The results of the excavations in the Kálmán Lambrecht Cave are due to the extraordinary intuition of László Vértes and to his unbroken faith in success. During the uncovering of the open-field settlements several smaller diggings corroborated the cave finds, excavated previously. His faith and enthusiasm serve as examples for the present and future speleologists. The connection of István Skoflek with László Vértes, developing into a warm friendship, begun in Tata, when the pupils of the Tata High School have found, resp. uncovered, with the guidance of László Vértes, the rich continuation of the Middle Palaeolithic settlement, published previously by Tivadar Kormos. In his lecture, accompanied by a slide projection, István Skoflek presented the suggestive personality, impressing everybody, and the specialist, adjusting the excavation methods to the possibilities elastically, who was, in his elaborating activity, very susceptible for the attendant finds, undispensable for an oecological reconstruction. In the last lecture the writer of the present paper outlined the greatest work of László Vértes, the Vértesszőlős excavations. I tried to give an idea of the struggle, fought for the rescue of every bone fragment, and ofhis ability, to organize and direct the excavation and at the same time to give a continuous account to the public and to prepare an important find meticulously. After a short summary of the events of this excavation, in progress for six years, I stressed the fact that the establishment of the Vértesszőlős open-air museum has been the triumph of the managing ability of Vértes, ofhis energy, mobilizing specialists and outsiders like. The lecture sequence was a short valuation of the prolific and exemplary life work of László Vértes, embracing his research activity from Solymár to Vértesszőlős - and from the Lower Palaeolithic to the Mesolithic.
