Cs. Sós Ágnes - Parádi Nándor: A csátaljai Árpád-kori temető és település

тт. THE SETTLEMENT On the eastern side of the Vágotthegy, to N-NE of the cemetery extending over the southern areas of the said hill, remains of a settlement were observed, which, however, could be uncovered but partly (Figs. 2,6-7). As f° r their form, grodun-plan and measures the remains of the houses and oven observed and excavated so far, correspond with those known from the excavations of villages of the Árpád period. The finds coming to light in the settlement (Figs. 8-12) may be dated in their lesser part to the eleventh century, in the bulk, however, to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, which points to the fact that the hamlet existed from the eleventh to the thirteenth century. Its beginning is contemporary roughly with the taking in use of the cemetery which would mean that the cemetery had belonged to the settlement. The foundation of the settlement, to be dated to the early eleventh century, may be connected indirectly with the settling of the remains of theMegyer clan in this area. As contrasted with settlements of the same period excavated or surveyed so far, ours belonged to the smaller ones, inhabited by 10 to 12 families, which corresponds with the data mentioned in the eleventh to thirteenth century documents. The cemetery was used to the end of the eleventh century or to the beginning of the twelfth century. As soon as the ecclesiastical authorities were in charge of the burials, the dead of this small settlement were inhumed near the church of a neighbouring village. The settlement was destroyed in all probability by the Mongols invading Hungary and after the destruction it was not populated any more.
