Biróné Sey Katalain: Későrómai centenionales lelet Gölléről

A FIND OF LATE ROMAN CENTENIONALES FROM GÖLLE The bulk of 301 coins, now in the Numismatic Section of the Hungarian National Museum, mainly Roman bronzes from the IVth century, are supposed to be a close find or a part of it unearthed on the confines of Gölle, County Somogy. In this area there are several vestiges of a Roman settlement, probably the remains of a fortified town; an excavation to be started soon will throw light on this problem. The earliest items of the find are those from the first century. In regard of mintages and chronology we have dealt only with the centenionales of Valentinian, Valens and Gratian as shown on our tabulation. The closing of the find can be determined firstly with the aid of the series minted in Thessalonica and Siscia. The bulk of the centenionales in our find consists of Siscian mints, 81 of the first and 77 of the second period. The types „Gloria" as well as „Securitas" appear in the find continuously with mints of above three emperors, closing with series RIC XVII (v. tabulation). The series RIC XVIII, XX are represented with only a few coins. The last centenionales Valentinian's mint „Gloria" - the monogram-marked piece of series RIC XXXII - represents the late term of Period II. The last issue of the Thessalonica mint is series RIC XXXVIII, minted shortly before the death of Valentinian I. In our find we can consider this Thessalonian mark as the latest one, on the strength of which we can put the closing of the find for the year 375 A. D.
