Tibor Kovács: Eastern Connections of North-Eastern Hungary in the Late Bronze Age

58 T. KOVÁCS Age there are also several metal types of local origin. This indicates that a considerable part of the population did not move. It can be surmised that the path of those compelled to flee is traceable in the material of a few graves unearthed in the cemetery on the outskirts of Soldanesti. 10 9 Even after the publication of the present study our knowlegde of the people and culture which we call the Berkesz —Demecser ethnic group is still very incomplete. 11 0 The hoards forming a closed unit 11 1 provide the best chance for getting acquainted with the metallurgy of these people. On the other hand the examination of the hoards in themselves may for instance allude only to the circumstance that a considerable change took place in the economy of the Late Bronze Age (the large-scale production of metal tools), but the process itself, the causes of its start may not be elucidated, as the burying of the hoards just marks the interruption of this process, the end of a developmental phase. The causes of the interruptions in the development can be discovered only in relation to the historical events, but this assumes the knowledge of the people (ethnos) living in this area and moreover so far as archaeological research permits, the knowlegde of the people and their culture (ethnicum). The former is used as a collective term which could be increased during the course of research. This concept includes the finds of all those peoples which give evidance of the fusion of local and eastern populations [1. the peoples of the Bárca and Felsőszőcs groups as well as of the eastern population (cf. note 99.) — 2. the peoples of the Egyek and Felsőszőcs groups as well as of the eastern population]. The latter and their inheritance are called by us the Berkesz —Demecser ethnic group. 11 1 Cf. notes 102 and 106.
