Bíróné Sey Katalin: A perbáli éremlelet

AHOARD OF ROMAN COINS FROM PERBÁL In 1953 a hoard of 526 bronze coins from the fourth century came to light in the vicinity of the village of Perbál. We do not possess exact data about the site. Earlier archaeological explorations and stray finds allow us to conclude that there must have been a Late Roman settlement in the vicinity of the village. The bulk of the hoard is comprised of maiorinae and centenionales of Constantius II and of Constantius Gallus, while a minor part of it includes the issues of Constans, Magnentius, Decentius and Vetranio. The FEL TEMP REPARATIO type characterizes the hoard and most of the coins may be assigned to the years of 351—354. Only a minor part of the hoard consists of the issues of the earlier period from 346 to ^50. In the hoard there is only one piece of the early „hut" representations of the FEL TEMP REPARATIO type and only eight coins of Constans. Thus the earliest issues of the hoard date from 348 to 349. The latest issue is undoubtedly from the last third of 354 as it is shown by the enumerated series of the latest mint marks. The latest coins were issued either immediately before the accession of Julian or exactly at that time. The cause for the burial of the hoard is uncertain. Barbarian raids were quite frequent in the province. Some other smaller hoards reflect the turmoil of these years as well. Probably we may connect the hiding of our hoard with some smaller local raids.
