Sándor Soproni: Two Inscribed Relics of the Cohors XIIX voluntariorum c. R

TWO INSCRIBED RELICS OF THE COHORS XIIX VOLUNTARIORUM C. R. For a long time the Hungarian National Museum has been in possession of two inscribed stones from Dunabogdány and Tahitótfalu. They have been referred to several times in the literature 1 but they are still unpublished. Both inscriptions contain the name of cohors XIIX voluntariorum stationed in the camp at Dunabogdány (Cirpi). Since the more recent papers on the history of the cohors are rather contradictory, it seems necessary to publish these two stones as well as to summarize and reconstruct the history of the cohors on the basis of the new data. In the vicinity of Tahitótfalu, — called ,,Irtványok dűlő" of Bogonhát, — nearby the camp of Dunabogdány, a few hundred metres west of the camp an inscribed tombstone fragment, a part of the top of a Late Roman tomb made of slabs came to light in 1 929.2 The picture field of the tombstone carved from hard, reddish sandstone, is missing; only the inscribed field, remained except its lower part. The measurements of the tombstone are: width 57 cm; thickness 11 cm, and its present height 74 cm. The inscription is placed in a framed plainfield. Only nine lines of the probably ten line original inscription remained (Figs. 7—8). It is not especially difficult to complete the inscription. The name of the heir of the deceased is completed as Macro; this seems to be the most reasonable. 3 The completed inscription reads as: D(iis) M(anibus) M(arcus) Valerius Cleme(n)s mile(s) coh(ortis) XIIX vol(untariorum) (centuria) Ulpi Fronto(nis) stip(endiorum) XXIIII h(ic) s(itus) e(st). Antonius M(a)cr(o) heres [facijendum [curavit]. The other inscribed fragment came to light from the ruins of the camp during the excavation at Dunabogdány carried out by Ákos Szalay in 1930. 1 Nagy L., Arch. Its exact site is: 395.5 metres north of Nagykert (Tormakert) on the Szentendre—Visegrád highway and then 165 metres west to the foot of the hills on the piece of ground of lot number 5058/1—2. 3 Concerning Macro, cf.
