Szabó Kálmán: A kecskemét - ballószögi avar sír

188 SZABÓ: AN AVAR GRAVE FROM KECSKEMÉT—BALLÓSZÖG 188 6. Iron arrow-heads (Pl. 1, figs. 4, 5, 6) with three blades, the characteristic form of the Avar period. The iron strap-end (fig. 12) 4-6 cm. long, the iron buckle (fig. 10) 2-9 cm. long and a hook for suspension (fig. 11), fragmentary measurement 5-2 cm., might have belonged to the strap of the quiver. 7. The iron rings (Pl. 1, figs. 8-9) were used perhaps on the belt attached by iron strips. On the belt might have also suspended the short 10 cm. long ironknife (fig. 7). From the bone-strips of a compound reflex bow remained only two fragments (PI. 1, figs. 2-3). Besides grave 1 some other poorly furnished graves, came to light on the 15 acre dug-up area. In one of these was a simple iron knife 13 cm. long at the left hand of the skeleton (Fig. 1, no. 1). I found nothing else in that grave. In another grave, dug up by the workmen, occurred also the fragment of an iron knife 15-4 cm. long (Fig. 1, no. 2). In the third grave was found an ironwrought axe-hammer 14-6 cm. long, and its cutting-edge 4-2 cm. broad (Fig. 1, no. 3). All the objects belonging to grave 1 may not have come to light in consequence of the disturbance of its soil. Most of the finds are fragmentKecskemét. ary. The collection of these are only due to the fact that in a suitable way we employed a sieve. The skeleton from grave 1 is preserved in the Museum of Kecskemét under the inventary number 114. The date of the finds is given by the relationship with the finds of Igar and those of Ozora, which are connected with the finds of Igar. The coin of Constantinos Pogonatos (668—671 A. D.) found among the finds of Ozora assigns the appearance of this group to the last decade of the seventh century. The appearance of incised lines ornament (Zahnschnitt) and interlaced animal motives, as well as the fact that gold and silver mounts were pressed on less valuable material indicate the aformentioned period. The quadrangular silver mounts are the imitations of a better executed specimen, where the inner decoration consists of a pressed gold plate. 1 Related finds came to light in the same place as those of griffin and floral motives. This indicates too that the date of the finds must be assigned to the middle period of the Avar reign. Kálmán Szabó 1 Dolg. 1937. Alajos Bálint, AVAR GRAVES AT BATIDA (AVAR SÍROK BATIDÄN), Pl. X, Figs. 1-4.
